Congratulations to Geoff Brown (Mississippi Delta '08) and Najib Jammal (Baltimore '03) on receiving the Kennedy Leadership Awards.

Through the generosity of Maureen and James A.C. Kennedy, the Kennedy Leadership Awards were established to celebrate alumni leaders who are having a profound impact with students and communities. The two Kennedy Leadership Awards are for:
Excellence in Teaching: which recognizes an alumni teacher whose leadership enables their students to achieve at the highest level, be affirmed in who they are and their potential, and advocate for a just future;
Innovation and Leadership Outside the Classroom: which recognizes an alum leader who, from another position of leadership, continues to create vital opportunities and access so that more Baltimore students have the futures they deserve.
This year's awardee for Excellence in Teaching is Geoff Brown - whose leadership goes beyond his classroom walls to live in the heart and minds of his students. As an 8th grade humanities teacher at Afya Public Charter School, Geoff serves as a team lead, a debate coach with the Baltimore Urban Debate League, and has helped form his school's student government. Geoff's work to connect his students interests and experiences to philosophy, literature, history, and social justice, encourages his scholars think critically and develop their own unique voices. The awardee for Innovation and Leadership Outside the Classroom this year is Najib Jammal, Principal of Lakeland Elementary Middle School. Najib's innovative approach to community partnerships with organizations like UMBC and Northrup Grumman offers rich learning and long-term opportunities for his students and their families. Between the 2015 and 2016 school years, Lakeland's PARCC scores grew by 30%. Najib's drive toward educational excellence for all students, coupled with his dedication to developing the leadership of others has expanded his impact on our city for generations to come. As part of our bold direction, we've expanded our programming to support a lifetime of learning. Hear from TFA alumna, Molly Bloom (Baltimore '13), as she shares her experience with our new alumni learning communities.
Earlier this month, we sat down with second year corps member, Erica Robb, and her Teach For America coach, Jessy Miller, to learn how TFA Baltimore’s one on one coaching model is helping Erica’s 2nd grade students achieve their academic and personal goals.
